Imagine that you are holding a ripe, as yellow as the sun, lemon in your hand. Try to picture the lemon, its shiny skin, scratch the skin with your finger and feel the smell. Now, imagine that you are holding a sharp knife in your other hand, and then slowly cut the lemon in half, feel the juice dripping down your hand, feel the smell, squeeze the lemon to make more juice flow...

How did your body react to this exercise? Isn't your mouth watering? But where's the lemon? Only in your head! And this is another strange observation about our brain: it does not see the difference between truth and imagination. You can talk your mind into everything, and you should start with:

"I am a confident and fluent speaker."
"I speak fluently when I talk to my friend, and I speak fluently when giving a presentation."
"As I speak more and more fluently, I am more and more self confident."

And so on. You can craft your own affirmations, aimed at the goal you want to reach, but you must remember the following:

  • The affirmation must always be in the present tense!
  • The affirmation must always be positive!
  • The affirmation must appeal to you emotionally!

The more positive and the more emotional affirmation, the stronger it is, the better it works.

You should repeat your affirmations out loud every day, just after you wake up, and before you go to sleep. You should also repeat the affirmation as often as possible when you only remember it. You can write it down, and while you are reading it, you can be singing it out, or do something that evokes positive emotions, too.

Technique number three is somewhat related to technique number two. And believe me, this is a mighty tool. I am talking about visualization here. Affirmation is words, visualization is words put into action, where you use both the power of affirmation and the power of your brain.

Visualization requires a quiet place, and some time only for yourself. You can be sitting, standing, lying down... doesn't matter. What matters is that you first relax with a breathing exercise, relax your body, and start repeating your affirmation. This time, however, create an adequate picture in your mind. If you say "I am fluent and confident speaker," see yourself in front of a large audience of total strangers to whom you have to make the speech, and see yourself speaking, hear yourself speaking, louder and louder, more and more fluently until you finish. See the audience cheering you, hear the words you say and hear the words you hear.

Positive words. Cast as much light upon the whole scene as you can. Add as many bright colors as you can. 1. Sing the words. If you try to speak in a singsong way, you just may have an easier time getting the words out. It might sound crazy, but this actually does help many people.

2. Visualize the letters of the word you're going to say. This exercise helps people with delivery.

3. Right before you're going to say a difficult word, take a deep breath.

4. Take your time speaking. You don't need to speak quickly, so don't put undue pressure on yourself.

5. If you go slowly - letter by letter, for example - you might be able to deliver the word easier. What this means is, if you feel like you're going to get stuck on the word "sponge", instead of saying it all at once, say "sp", "on" "ge".

6. If you have something in your mouth while speaking, or chew something, this might help.

7. You can also try speaking very loudly, or whispering. When you speak loudly, a stutter usually disappears, and if you whisper, the stutter is not as noticeable.

There are, of course, other alternatives as well, but these are a great starting point.

How to Stop Stuttering Fast

If you have come to this article because you don't know how to stop stuttering, then I am going to show you what you need to do to speak fluently like everyone else. The methods I have outlined here have been tried and tested by me, as I used to stutter myself. Take some time to absorb the tips I have for you here, and your speech will improve!

I hated not knowing how to stop stuttering when I was growing up. It is a very difficult problem to live with. My parents simply said that I would grow out of it, and that it was just a phase. They really didn't understand the wider implications it had on my life! For example, my confidence was pretty low, and I would tend to stay at home as opposed to going out, as I didn't want other people to know how bad my stutter was.

I was just about to go off to college, and I still had my stutter. Obviously, I didn't want to be the same person I was in high school and I wanted to learn how to speak fluently and go out and have fun like everyone else. Here are three tips that I found helped me the most.

The number one tip to learn how to stop stuttering is to think before you speak. Often, I would mess up my sentences in stressful situations, yet when I was singing a song I liked, my stutter was basically gone! This was because I knew what I was going to say as the words were in my head. So instead of making a sentence up as you go along, say it in your head first.

My second tip is to practice your speaking by grabbing a book and reading aloud to a group of friends or family members. What this does, is it gets you into a good speaking habit while also boosting your confidence when speaking to a group of several people.

My final tip to learning how to stop stuttering is to only speak on the exhale. When I used to stutter, I kept making the terrible mistake of holding your breath whilst speaking. This makes you rush your sentences and can make the stutter worse. Instead, take deep breaths and speak whilst slowly exhaling.

I have outlined a few tips here about how to stop stuttering which worked for me when I had a problem with my speech fluency. There is no harm in trying them out for yourself too, although there are some killer techniques that I haven't mentioned yet.
